Description
Visiting Research Scientist
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Illinois at Chicago seeks a Visiting Research Scientist whose research will focus on elucidating the interactions among T cells, neurons, microglia, and astrocytes in autoimmune diseases, using advanced scientific and experimental techniques. The successful candidate will conduct research, develop experimental protocols, and devise methods to apply scientific principles and theories to research projects.
Job Duties
This position is highly dependent on experience with experimental animals and autoimmune disease animal models, including but not limited to CNS autoimmune diseases. Thus, at least 3 years of experience with experimental animals and autoimmune models is required.
Design experiments investigating cell-cell interactions within inflamed mouse tissues, using conventional and gnotobiotic mouse models, molecular analyses, histopathology, multicolor flow cytometry, multicolor immunohistochemistry, and multi-omics approaches (RNA-seq, metabolomics).
Perform molecular and cellular experiments to elucidate the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying microbe-host interactions, using cell culture, molecular biology and biochemistry tools, cell-based assays, and gnotobiotic and conventional mouse models.
Engage in laboratory research, analyze data and information, and evaluate and report findings to the PI.
Oversee and mentor postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and medical student trainees; participate in the oversight of laboratory activities.
Write grant applications for extramural funding; prepare and submit research reports describing findings.
Author publications in peer-reviewed journals, present papers at professional society meetings, and develop new designs or techniques of material significance to important applied research problems.
Minimum Qualifications
A PhD or MD in Immunology, Molecular Biology, or a related field is required. A minimum of 3 years of post-PhD or post-MD research experience is required. Previous experience working with autoimmune mouse models is a must. Experience with mouse models, including parabiosis, and multicolor (4–5-laser) flow cytometry is also required. Applicants must describe this experience in detail in their cover letter.
