Summary

An environmental epidemiologist (PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health (Sorbonne Universities/ Université Pierre et Marie Curie Paris VI) (2014), Master of Environment and Hazards (Université Claude Bernard Lyon I) (2007), Dr. Myriam Mrad Nakhlé (MMN) was initially educated in Biology. Between 2008 and 2016, she has been lecturer and researcher at the Faculty of Sciences of Saint Joseph University and the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM) in the field of the impact of air pollution on health. In addition, she has been a volunteer at arcenciel from 2007 till 2016, in charge of the research and development unit.

MMN joined the Faculty of Health Sciences at University of Balamand in January 2016 as an Assistant Professor at the Public Health Programs. She was appointed as Director of the Master of Public Health Program in January 2017. In January 2019, she was appointed Chairperson of the Public Health Department.

Ongoing studies leaded by MMN deal with the effects of ambient air pollution and indoor air pollution on respiratory, cardiovascular and skin allergic diseases in urban settings especially in Beirut Lebanon (Beirut Air Pollution and Health Effects BAPHE Study), waste management in urban and rural settings and healthcare waste management in Lebanon and several Arabic region. MMN is collaborating with several national and international institutions to evaluate the health effects of air pollution in Eastern Mediterranean cities.

MMN is the author and co-author of several international peer-reviewed articles and other publications. She has given many lectures and presentations at various meetings.

Chairpersons at FHS assist the Dean in faculty recruitment and supervise departmental activities.
The duties of the chairperson include:
- Scheduling department meetings
- Preparing and presiding over all departmental meetings
- Overseeing departmental faculty in an annual evaluation of their performance and preparing written evaluations reports.
- Making candid and documented recommendations to the Dean regarding promotion in rank, advancement to senior faculty status, and renewal of contracts of departmental faculty members.
- Assisting the Dean in recruiting new faculty in compliance with institutional policies.
- Assisting in the orientation of new faculty members with regard to departmental, faculty, and institutional policies and procedures.
- Encouraging departmental personnel to participate in professional development activities.
- Preparing, in consultation with department faculty, department goals, objectives, descriptions and revisions of program or curricula, and course descriptions for the catalogue as well as future program planning.
- Preparing, in consultation with departmental faculty, departmental budget and supervising the use of budget funds within the department.
- Preparing, in consultation with departmental faculty, the
recruitment plan of the department
- Preparing the annual report on the department’s activities, researches and progress.
- Heading the admissions committee.
- Maintaining an accurate and up-to-date inventory of departmental equipment and facilities.
- Work with the Dean and other members of the faculty council on developing proper communication channels with national and international ventures and institutions, and seeking external resources for support and funding for Faculty projects and research activities.
- Developing collaboration with local and international organizations.
