About

Summary

For 13 years, I have combined research and teaching with my work as a lawyer, my work in the non-governmental sector and my work as an expert in governmental and international organisations. I investigate the relationship between theory and empirical reality, i.e. whether people's theories and opinions are in line with reality. I am particularly interested in the social impact of law, namely 'Law in Action'. I always combine my extensive interpersonal and international experience with academic theory. With my extensive experience and broad background, I research and publish in areas such as sociology of law, anthropology, international law, political science and related fields. I am always interested in human beings and their vision of the world. I pay a lot of attention to methodology and usually base my research on field methods. I have published 4 books and 36 articles so far. With knowledge of 7 foreign languages and experience of working for the European Commission, I publish all over Europe.

Professional interests

I am particularly interested in examining how theoretical reality (facts, laws, myths and legends, theories) corresponds to empirical reality. I am interested in what people think about apparent and theoretical issues. I am particularly interested in the actual impact of law (mainly international and EU law) on the reality of the application of law in the administration of justice, by lawyers and by ordinary people. Currently, I mainly work on sociology and anthropology of law in the context of international, EU, cross-border law. I pay a lot of attention to different methodological approaches and research methodologies.
