Brochado, University of Würzburg, Würzburg, Germany
Description
Investigating the molecular mechanism of antimicrobial drug combinations
Bacteria are among the most difficult-to-treat infectious agents. Our recently established lab develops high-throughput approaches to study antimicrobial mode of action, and decipher how bacterial molecular networks re-wire in response to multi-antibiotic therapies (Brochado et al, Nature 2018). We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying species-specificity of drug combinations against P. aeruginosa. This exciting project combines high-throughput screening of mutant libraries with detailed in-depth molecular investigation.
We offer:
- The opportunity to work on a timely topic – antibiotics – in an exciting environment, using cutting edge technologies for high-throughput systems biology approaches in bacteria.
- Continuous scientific mentoring & academic training.
- Salary benefits according to public service positions in Germany.

Candidate requirements
- Excellent MSc in Biological Sciences, Molecular Biology or equivalent.
- Sound knowledge and strong interest in microbiology and molecular biology.
- Computational biology knowledge is an advantage, but not required.
- Fluent English speaking and writing skills, German is not required.
About the employer
The Brochado lab applies a wide range of state-of-the-art systems biology tools, such as high-throughput phenotypic screening of bacterial knockout libraries to elucidate antibiotic mode of action. We are part of the Biocenter and the ZINF, Würzburg University in Germany, which offer a vibrant and international research environment.
The University of Würzburg aims to increase the number of women in science. Therefore, women are especially encouraged to apply for this position. Physically handicapped persons will be preferred in case they are equally qualified.
